Lord George CareyTuesday 3rd JuneWe are delighted that
the former Archbishop of Canterbury is honoring us with a visit to KLC. Lord Carey will share his insights into, and outspoken views of, the Church’s relationship with the Jewish community and the State of Israel. He will comment on issues such as the possibility of the Church’s disinvestment in Israel and his successor’s comments about Sharia law in the UK. He will share with us his hopes for interfaith dialogue and co-operation within a troubled and dangerous world. As the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey proactively encouraged interfaith dialogue and strove to forge better relationships with Jews and Muslims. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury to publish his memoirs entitled "Know the Truth". In retirement, he is Co-Chair of the Council of 100, which is seeking to bridge the gulf between the West and Islamic worlds. In February 2006, he attracted controversy by declaring in a letter to The Times that a General Synod motion supported by his successor in favour of disinvestment in a company active in the occupied territories of Israel made him "ashamed to be an Anglican.” Lord Carey married Eileen Harmsworth Hood in 1960, and they have four children and thirteen grandchildren. |
