JEWS IN MUSIC with PHILIP HYMAN
After his very popular previous KLC courses, we are delighted to welcome
back Philip Hyman, who will present four fascinating talks illustrated with
music. There’s something for everyone – the unknown, the popular, and a
fascinating tale from recent history. |

UNSUNG HEROES
Whether or not you remember the part Moscheles played in the life of Mendelssohn,
his music is certainly worth getting to know. His interesting life took him from being
Beethoven’s friend and colleague, via twenty-one years as a major figure in London’s
musical life, to succeeding Mendelssohn in Leipzig. And what was a nice Jewish
composer doing in Jamaica in the 1930s? Tonight is also your chance to find out all
about Arthur Benjamin. |

LEONARD BERNSTEIN (1918-1990)
Last year Philip presented an enthralling introduction to Bernstein’s first 25 years. By
popular demand, he will present a full survey of Bernstein’s life and work over two KLC
evenings. Teacher, composer, pianist and conductor, Bernstein was the most famous
American musician of his age; a larger-than-life figure whose legacy includes some of
the world’s most famous musicals and treasured symphonic recordings. |

MUSIC IN TEREZIN
One of the most fascinating, uplifting, but also disturbing stories in the tragedy of the
Holocaust is that of the writers, artists and composers who were gathered together
in Theresianstadt. Tonight Philip tells the story of the composers and musicians of
Terezin, and plays some of the wonderful music composed and performed there. |
